Tatyana day - Students day

The first reference to the Student Day dates back to the empress Elizaveta Petrovna’s era. On January 25 1755, she signed a decree founding the Moscow University. From then onward, the 25th of January has become official University Day in Russia, and since then Saint Tatiana has been considered a patron saint of students.

The memory of Saint Tatiana was venerated in many churches with solemn prayer services, choirs’ performances. The first Moscow universities saw festive ceremonies that consisted of two parts: an official one and students’ noisy, merry open air celebrations. The students walked around the city all day and all night long singing songs and making competitions.

The feast gained currency in Europe in 1941, when the International Student Day was founded during a student meeting in London aimed at fighting against fascism.

Tatiana Day has been an important public event in Moscow during the last several decades. Every year, new universities and institutes, countries of the former Soviet Union and other states join the celebration.

The Korston Hotel Moscow does not forget about the feast either. The Korston team offers all women, whose name is Tatiana, and all the students an additional discount of 15% on all of the hotel services*.
